Open Farm Day – Buying Local Starts in New Brunswick

September 26th, 2019 Fredericton – More than 11,000 visitors took part in Open Farm Day events showcasing agricultural operations in New Brunswick on September 15th. A total of 29 New Brunswick farms opened their gates to the public.

“We have such devoted farmers throughout New Brunswick and we know that we can serve fresh local products to our families, meal after meal. Open Farm Day is about connecting the public not only to their food, but to the spirit of agriculture as well.” – Christian Michaud, President of the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick

Serving as the organizers of New Brunswick’s for Open Farm Day, the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick’s goal for the event is to connect the public with their local farmers and to showcase New Brunswick’s wide range of exceptional products. This year’s participants included distilleries, goat and alpaca fiber farms, produce growers, cattle and dairy farmers and many more. Guests from across the province were able to visit farms and ask important questions about the local food industry and understand the importance of buying local and supporting the province’s economy.

“Our family stumbled across Open Farm Day a couple of years ago and it has since become a highlight of our fall calendar!  We love taking the day to tour around our beautiful province and see our hard working farmers at work.  Not only is it a great opportunity to see different parts of rural NB, it is a great opportunity to teach our young children about where food comes and, most of all, the importance of supporting our local food providers.  Thank you to Agricultural Alliance of NB and, of course, to the farmers who graciously open their doors every year.  We’ll be back in 2020!” – Ryan Seymour, Open Farm Day visitor

“What a wonderful day! We loved sharing our farm and the work we do with so many happy and interested visitors. We particularly enjoyed watching children and adults alike interacting and sharing cookies with our little donkey, Wallace. I think it’s safe to say we all had a fun day, but especially Wallace. Thanks Agricultural Alliance – we’ll definitely be participating again next year!” –Sara & Paul, Grimross Farm

“I had the pleasure of participating in Open Farm Day on September 15th.  It is always interesting to find out where our daily food comes from and how it gets to our tables. These Open Farm Days not only serve as an educational event for the whole family, but they also help in guiding our future farmers to a vocation they may have never thought of before. I had the opportunity to visit four out of the 29 participating farms. I thank them all for keeping this tradition ongoing for 19 years. This a great initiative of the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick and I applaud their hard work and dedication to the province’s farmers.” – Hon. Ross Wetmore, Minister of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries

Open Farm Day was a highly mediatized event, utilizing primarily digital advertising such as Facebook and website banners, as well as radio ads and flyers distributed at several farmer’s markets and events across the province. The public was able to locate the participating farms list on the Agricultural Alliance’s new website, as well as on their Facebook page.

The event was made possible with the support of the Provincial government and by Farm Credit Canada.
