Open Farm Day Celebrates 22 years in Atlantic Canada

Fredericton, New Brunswick – Farmers across the Maritimes will be joining forces to celebrate the 22nd Anniversary of Open Farm Day in Atlantic Canada. This year, the event takes place on Sunday, September 18th, 2022.

Given the success of last year’s hybrid event, Atlantic Open Farm Day 2022 will also be held in a hybrid manner. This format gives farms the option to host either in-person or virtual visits and to participate in the format that suits them best.

Each farm will offer its own unique experience this year by hosting either in-person and virtual farm visits. The public can expect tours, demonstrations, u-picks, wagon rides and tastings for in-person activities, as well as Facebook Live videos and pre-filmed videos hosted on the Atlantic Open Farm Day YouTube channel for farms hosting a virtual Open Farm Day.

Details for each participating farm can be found on the Atlantic Open Farm Day website, which was newly launched last year www.atlanticopenfarmday.ca. The bilingual site highlights participating farms across the Maritimes, event activities, farm maps, digital games, and a virtual passport. The site also features a trip planning system to make it easy for the public to plan their Open Farm Day activities.

“Our farmers can be proud of their businesses and their products. As they open their doors to visitors for Open Farm Day, I invite all Atlantic Canadians to meet them, learn from them and see how much they care for their land and animals.”

  • The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“Open Farm Day is a great way for families to learn more about what the day in the life of a farmer looks like and see where their food comes from. New Brunswick has a long agricultural history, and the sector is an important contributor to our provincial economy. Exposing the younger generation to the sector is crucial. Open Farm Day allows folks to see firsthand the labour, innovation and technology involved in modern farming. And having the virtual aspect again this year makes the events even more accessible. I thank the participating farms that were kind enough to open their doors and provide an experience that many will never forget.”
–              Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Margaret Johnson

“I would encourage everyone to take the time to visit at least a few farms this open farm day. It will give you a greater appreciation of where your food comes from and how farmers put their heart and soul in their work.”
–              Christian Michaud, President of the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick.

With the help of their respective coordinators, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia participated in the planning and advertising of Atlantic Open Farm Day. The close partnership with the other Atlantic Provinces gives the opportunity to foster new ideas and leverage inter-provincial strengths to make Open Farm Day a successful event.
